Apart from the challenge Derlon is facing to paint a so-called “Bijlmer Flat” in Amsterdam South-East, his next challenge will be to pass his knowledge and inspiration on to a whole lot of school kids from the area, following a graffiti workshop around his wall.
“Learning is by doing” is our philosophy. That’s why we will hand out material and support for kids to make their paintings, based on Derlons techniques. Inspired by the local “zine”- story telling style of ‘Cordel’ from the Northeast of Brazil, the kids will learn how to tell their story making templates of their own faces. A selection of the most creative and artistic faces will be show-cased in the Tropenmusem Junior during the exhibition ‘MixMax Brasil’ opening in October of 2012.
Hopefully the weather will be good this summer, because the workshops around Derlon's wall will contain plenty of water as well. With templates Derlon developed especially for this event, the kids can spray as much as they like with water on high pressure, to make reversed graffiti. This way, the streets will turn into a ‘clean’-art-gallery and suddenly dirt will be interspersed with beautiful figures.
In October of this year, Tropenmuseum Junior will open its new exhibition ‘MixMax Brasil’ especially for kids. The exhibition has as its main theme the cultural heritage of Pernambuco and its capital Recife. The exhibition is full of activities that give the young audience the opportunity to experience Pernambuco, its music, its nature and art. Derlon Almeida is one of the artists who participate in the exhibition.
